Please tell us a little about yourself:
Hi, I am Yuri Marschall. I’m a 26 year old Dutch guy and living in the most beautiful city—Hamburg, Germany. In my free time I create stuff and draw a lot. This is one of the reasons I got addicted to latte art, when I first saw it 8 years ago.
How did you get started in coffee?:
I started working in a hotel bar. I fell in love when someone first showed me how to work on a real espresso machine. After that I trained myself a lot to get better and better. After 7 years I won the German title because of that.
Please list the coffee competitions you have participated in, what year they took place, and your results:
1st Place – DALLMAYR City Barista Freiburg 2018
1st Place – Latte Art Throwdown Munich 2018
1st Place – Latte Art Coffee Festival RM 2017
3rd Place – Int. & Tirol LAC 2017
What are you excited to do in Berlin?:
I’m excited to participate at the World Championships, and meet people from around the world! Because I live in Germany it’s possible for my family and friends to watch it live and in person. That’s a once in a lifetime chance, I think!
What is the most unusual vessel you have poured latte art into?:
A spoon
What is the secret to great latte art?:
Trying, training, training, trying, training, training, and watching others while doing it—that helps me the most!
What are your interests outside of coffee?:
Reading books, eating good food, and being creative with everything I do.
Where do you see yourself in five years?:
I hope to train young passionate baristas to share my passion for coffee and the environment. I’d like to maybe open my own small coffee shop, or something else. I hope I will finally reach the world finals one day, that is my biggest dream.
